Rio Tinto and Newrest celebrate QMM Awards in Madagascar

Newrest rewarded for its work

At the QMM (QIT MADAGASCAR MINERALS) Awards ceremony, the Group’s teams have shone, winning two prizes.

The first prize, “Contractor Best Improvement”, was awarded to the entire team in recognition of the improvement in day-to-day catering services throughout 2023 with its client RIO Tinto.

The second prize, “Best Employee Contractor”, was won by Newrest collaborator Hafaliana Mary Désirée, known as “Nanah”, Quality Supervisor. This distinction not only recognizes her remarkable development within the company, but also her significant contribution when discussing HSE issues with clients. Her expertise and commitment were praised by the entire team.

Newrest, a key player in base management on the African continent, has had a presence in Madagascar since 2006, demonstrating its lasting commitment to the region.

About a year ago, Newrest took a significant step forward by signing a contract with QMM, a subsidiary of the Rio Tinto group, in Fort-Dauphin. This strategic partnership enables Newrest to extend its expertise to mining players on the island.

QMM specializes in the extraction of ilmenite, a precious mineral that plays a crucial role in the production of titanium and iron. The mining of this mineral is of the utmost importance, as it is used as a raw material in numerous industrial sectors, notably in the manufacture of white pigments for paints, plastics, paper, etc.

This year-long partnership has proved its worth and looks set to have a promising future.
