Newrest, leader on the territory

Newrest signed a mining contract in Fort-Dauphin with QMM (QIT Madagascar Minerals), a subsidiary of the Rio Tinto group. This mining company extracts ilmenite, an important titanium and iron ore. Eventually, it will even be used in the composition of paint.

Newrest, leader in the management of remote sites in Africa, has been present in Madagascar since 2006. The group is now a national reference in the out-of-home catering market.

Rio Tinto entrusted Newrest teams with the management of 2 restaurants from a central kitchen. The first one is in a floating factory on an artificial lake and the second one is a “satellite” site which receives the food in hot chain. The group is careful to respect its commitments in terms of food quality and safety, which are an integral part of the QHSE program “I Care”. 60 Malagasy employees provide 900 meals a day on the two sites for the QMM crew and its subcontractors.  Newrest teams manage the daily logistics to provide catering services to this new partner.

Commitments and innovations

The group respects its commitment made through the Newrest CSR charter “be the change” by promoting employment and local suppliers while encouraging the use of digital tools.  Newrest’s project is to implement local production activities in all sectors where the group is present. Since its arrival in Madagascar, Newrest has been involved with local communities in line with its commitments.

Thus, Newrest sources its products from suppliers close to the mine but also at the national level. Newrest has recently invested in a water bottling plant to limit its environmental impact.

At the social level, Newrest focuses on training and recruiting Malagasy employees (99%).

For many years, Newrest has supported the associations “Entendre le Monde” and “Operations Smile” which work to offer a better daily life to people affected by diseases or malformations. On the medical side, the group is part of its local ecosystem and appears as a committed player.
